How to Prevent

Are you joining the go green movement and taking your groceries home in reusable bags? You could be taking more than just fresh fruits and veggies into your kitchen! While these bags are great for the environment, if not taken care of properly can also become contaminated with germs.

How contamination occurs:

If you are brining home poultry in your reusable bag, it can come in contact with other meat and produce and contaminate them with bacteria.

Cross contamination also can happen when meat produce, and pre-cooked foods are together in the same bag.

Sometimes, your poultry container can leak and cause bacteria to come in contact with the bag.

Here are some tips to prevent contamination:

Wash your bags regularly. Did you know that 97% of shoppers admit to never washing them?!

Only use your grocery bags for groceries. Designate them only to bringing home food and nothing else.

Label your reusable bags. Create one for produce, meats, and other products to avoid contamination.

Don’t leave them in the car. Heat is the perfect environment for bacteria to grow.
