Did you know that new research shows your body shape can tell you a lot about your health? Your shape can determine what health risks and diseases you may be prone towards. We all come in different shapes and sizes, and the first step is to determine which type you are. Your shape is defined by a waist-to-hip ratio, and where your body stores its fat. Some common factors that influence your shape are genes, diet, and exercise.

Triangle and pear shapes.

If you gain most of your weight below the waist, in your hips, butt, and thighs, you may be at an increased risk for heart disease. Pear shaped women are also at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis.

Circle and apple shapes.

If your waist is as wide, or wider than your hips, you have a circle or apple shape. Fat around the midsection, also called, omentum, is the most dangerous type of fat because it is located close to your important organs. This body shape is at a higher risk for developing heart disease, artery disease, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.

Rectangle shape.

This shape gains weight all over the body. This type is a risk for osteoarthritis and joint pain.

Measuring your body mass index (BMI) is a great way to determine if you are in a healthy weight for your height. There are many BMI calculators you can use to measure if your body is in the healthy range. It is important to maintain a healthy weight to reduce your risk for illness and chronic diseases.
