Next year, the Federal government is making plans to change nutrition labels to show the amount of added sugars and redo serving sizes to be closer in proportion to how people actually eat. Labels can be very misleading, and it is important to read them carefully! When reading a nutrition label, beware of these ingredients:

Artificial Sweeteners

They may have zero-calories, but they also come with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes! Did you know that they can be up to 700x sweeter than natural sugar, causing you to crave it even more?

Trans Fat

Trans fats are artificially created by adding hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid. STAY AWAY from these unsaturated fats, they increase your risk for heart disease!

High-Fructose Corn Syrup

If you see HFCS on a label, chances are the food is highly processed and full of added sugar. They are most common in sodas, but you should double check muffins, breads, ketchup and salad dressings!
